The Full Story
Tibetan Sky began with a promising start.
A debut album was scheduled, recorded, and ready to be released before disaster struck. Without warning, the recording engineer, along with the album’s carefully crafted master tapes, mysteriously disappeared. Two years later, the disillusioned producer resurfaced, confessing that he had abandoned the project. Undeterred by this setback, Alex, now married, made the decision to settle in Japan, due to the rising costs of living in the UK.
And so the first chapter of Tibetan Sky came to a close…
However, fate was not yet done with the band. During Alex’s relocation to Japan, his airline company lost his luggage, including his treasured guitar. In spite of this, Alex embraced his new life in Tokyo with fervor, going so far as to enroll in a Japanese language class where he met Apriyanto Bambang. The two immediately connected over a love of music and a desire to perform live, laying the foundation for Tibetan Sky’s future in Japan.
With Bambang taking over bass duties and Alex having recovered his guitar, the two began to jam and search for other musicians to fill out the remaining slots in Tibetan Sky. Eventually, the band found their vocalist in the form of Elizabeth “Ellie”. Ellie’s lyrical prowess and captivating vocal delivery perfectly complemented the songs that the band was writing at the time and thus, Tibetan Sky became a trio. A Japanese drummer, Masaki, and Spanish lead guitarist, José, were also added the band's roster, rounding out the band.
Together, this international lineup embarked on a series of energetic and passionate live performances, captivating audiences with their raw emotion and dynamic sound. Buoyed by the positive response, Tibetan Sky decided it was time to record an album that would showcase their collective talents and distinct musical style.
The album, Lhasa, was both an expression of their personal experiences and a pursuit of spiritual enlightenment, as the lyrics tackled themes of transformation, overcoming adversity, and searching for something beyond mere material reality.
However, just as Tibetan Sky released their first single, "Birds”, fate intervened once again, bringing with it the COVID-19 pandemic. Live music scenes shut down en masse, leaving the band with very few opportunities to promote their work. Moreover, Ellie found herself faced with a difficult decision: return to France to support her family or stay in Japan to support the band. With a heavy heart, she chose the former, leaving Tibetan Sky in a state of uncertainty.
Unable to find a suitable replacement for their departed vocalist and weary from trying to maintain the band’s momentum during a pandemic-induced hiatus, the remaining members reluctantly decided to part ways. Alex, now a father, put the band on hold for a year to focus on his family.
Embracing the intensity and emotional depth of melodic hardcore, Alex crafted songs that blended aggressive instrumentation with soaring melodies, resulting in cathartic songs that exemplified, not only the struggles in his own life, but also the collective struggles of the world. This evolution in the sound demonstrated Alex's ability to masterfully explore new sonic territories while staying true to his core identity.
From 2022-2023, Tibetan Sky experienced a resurgence in the form of a new lineup that brought together talented musicians from all corners of the globe. Jeremiah “J” Pilkerton, a charismatic vocalist from California, took the band’s sound to new heights with his elevated stage presence and passionate vocals. Julian Wilkinson, a bassist/vocalist from Australia, helped lay the band’s sonic foundation as well as add rich harmonies to J’s spirited melodies. And Mike Vello, a drumming virtuoso from Boston, allowed the band to expand their musical palate and push themselves further than ever before.
Fate brought these musicians together as they frequented Tokyo's vibrant live house scene, making connections and gaining the mutual respect of other bands and venue owners. This newfound synergy has sparked a creative fire within the band, and their songwriting and musical output has never been faster or more expressive. With each member bringing in their own network of connections, talents, and ideas, the members of Tibetan Sky have, yet again, found themselves on the precipice of success.
